Singing Gate
by Deniz Kurt
10 october
On Friday October 10th, the winners of our Open Call 2025 present their projects at Ubik (WORM), located at the Boomgaardstraat 69 Rotterdam.
Come listen, question and discover how art and making processes contribute to real change. Continuous program with presentations, talks and space for connection.
A monument that lives, breathes, and sings!
With Singing Gate, Deniz Kurt creates an interactive installation in the heart of Katendrecht, her own neighbourhood. Not a statue in stone or bronze, but a gate built from endemic plants and reclaimed metals from the Port of Rotterdam.
Touch the gate, and it comes alive: the bio-electrical impulses of the plants are translated into sounds that resonate back into the city. A living symphony where nature and urban life, heritage and future, meet.
Katendrecht, with its layered history of migration, harbour life, and transformation, is the ground for this work. Singing Gate is both an ode to the heritage of “De Kaap” and a reminder of our intrinsic connection to nature—even in the middle of the city.
Deniz Kurt is a Rotterdam-based media artist and creative technologist. Her practice merges ecology and technology through biomimicry, sonification, and algorithmic processes. Her installations have been exhibited internationally, including at Ars Electronica, NXT Museum, and Dutch Design Week.
